A triple Group I winning son of Galileo, Rip Van Winkle kicked a big goal at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on Friday with a colt from his first Southern Hemisphere bred crop of foals.
Shuttling to Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand, Rip Van Winkle made a splash with his only entry at this sale, a colt from Linnet that made $320,000 for Coolmore when secured by Gerald Ryan/Jadeskye Racing.
The second foal of a daughter of Group II winner Balinchy, the colt was a successful pinhook having been bought by Tom Magnier from the NZB Select Weanling Sale last year for $75,000.
“I loved the sire as a racehorse and when I first saw this colt at the farm six weeks ago I marked him down then as one I’d like to buy.” Gerald Ryan said.
“I thought he was one of the best colts in their (Coolmore) draft. He’s a lovely horse, he’ll race for some existing owners. They liked him as much as I do.”
Rip Van Winkle has 37 lots catalogued for sale in the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale that commences at Karaka on January 27.
