Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh will be hoping he can win another Melbourne Cup with this big strong colt from the first crop of Danehill’s five time Group I winner Duke of Marmalade.
Consigned for sale by Coolmore as agent at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, the colt fetched $420,000 and is a half-brother to Group I VRC Melbourne Cup and MRC Caulfield Cup winner Viewed being the eighth foal of Lover’s Knot NZ).
The prize colt was bred by Sydney based breeder Ian Johnson, who also bred and sold champion stayer Viewed, a winner of nine races and $6million in prizemoney for the Bart Cummings stable.
Mr Johnson has been a big fan of Duke of Marmalade and Lover’s Knot has a weanling filly by the sire and was covered by him again last year.
Back in 2009, when Mr Johnson selected Duke of Marmalade for Lover’s Knot he offered the following comments.
“For me, he was the standout when I saw the stallions,” said Johnson.
“They are a lovely bunch of horses (at Coolmore) but physically he really stood out. He has great presence about him. Obviously he has a good pedigree, but physically he has what I am looking for with Lover’s Knot.
“She’s a big, coarse mare and he has that quality that I think she needs. I particularly liked his backend, his hind part. As I said, he has everything I was looking for.”
After seeing his yearling colt sell for $420,000, Mr Johnson can be well pleased with his selection!
