$575,000 for Scat Daddy Colt

A colt by Scat Daddy topped the first session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training sale in Timonium, Maryland on Monday.

Consigned by King’s Equine as agent for Cloverleaf Farm, the athletic chestnut colt will be trained by Bob Baffert and is the first foal from unraced Magical Mist, a half-sister by Congaree to Grade I winner J.P’s Gusto.

“Scat Daddy has done a lot of good things,” said bloodstock agent Donato Lanni, who secured the star colt for $575,000.

“He looked a lot like a really good Congaree. Bobby [Baffert] came out here Sunday after the Preakness. I showed him the horse and he really liked him. He is a very good horse. And a really well-made colt.”

Cloverleaf Farm purchased Magical Mist, with this Scat Daddy foal in utero, for just $14,000 out of the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February sale.

“It was a pretty good return on our investment,” Matt Lyons, general manager of Sykes’s Woodford Thoroughbreds, as well as Cloverleaf, told TDN.

“You never know where the good ones are going to come from.

“We thought he was a beautiful horse. He is by a very good stallion and he breezed well.

“Everything came together. He was very popular at the barn, had a lot of scopes and we were very confident coming up here. He was way above his reserve.”
