60th Stakes-winner for Scat Daddy

The leading North American 2YO sire this year, Scat Daddy added another impressive stakes-winner to his tally with a strong finishing victory in the $74,000 Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita for Surfside Tiara (2f Scat Daddy x Starlight Tiara, by More Than Ready).

Seventh at her last start in Grade I company, Surfside Tiara appreciated the drop in grade to surge home between runners and snatch a half-length win in the six furlong sprint.

“I tried to send her from the gate, but I knew those three fillies were all going to go for the lead, so I knew if I didn’t get the lead I would still just sit in behind Lemhill Basr,” said winning rider Rafael Bejarano.

“I let them go a little and when we got to the stretch, I put my filly in the clear and she showed me a big kick.”

Prepared by Jerry Hollendorfer, Surside Tiara has won two of four starts and nearly $100,000 in prizemoney with more stakes races in her sights.

A $120,000 purchase from the OBS March 2YO Sale, Surfside Tiara is the second winner for Starlight Tiara, who is a half-sister to the dam of outstanding juvenile Air Force Blue, winner of the Grade I Dewhurst Stakes, National Stakes and Phoenix Stakes this year in the UK and Ireland.

This is also the family of Grade I winning fillies Flanders and Surfside, so Surfside Tiara is bred to be well above average.

Surfside Tiara is the 60th stakes-winner for Scat Daddy, who is enjoying a career best year in the US.
