Albury trainer Brett Cavanough is getting the best from six year-old gelding Niblick (6g Encosta de Lago x Leica Vista, by Sir Tristram), who posted his second Black Type win in two starts for his new trainer when taking out the Listed $170,000 Albury Gold Cup on Friday.
A former classy stakes performer in Melbourne for the Lloyd Williams team, Niblick was second up from a spell and is obviously in peak form having won the Listed National Sprint in Canberra last start.
Niblick was awarded the 2000 metre feature on protest, taking his overall record to eight wins and four placings from 21 starts with prizemoney of $434,125.
Niblick was sold last year as part of the Inglis conducted Hudson Conway Dispersal in Melbourne for $200,000 and obviously has plenty of good racing left in him.
Bred and sold as a yearling by Swettenham Stud, Niblick fetched $220,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and is a half-brother to Group II winner Moon Dragon and is one of six winners from stakes-placed Sir Tristram (IRE) mare Leica Vista, a half-sister to Group I winner Leica Smile.
Niblick is one of 93 stakes-winners by champion sire Encosta de Lago, who is fast closing in on 100 winners for the season and has 18 entries for the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
