Another Stakes Success for Red Rifle

Giant's Causeway conformation

Handy stayer Red Rifle (4g Giant’s Causeway x May Night, by Gulch) posted another feature race win in the $98,000 Yankee Affair Stakes at Belmont on the weekend.

The Todd Pletcher trained gelding showed good stamina to forge clear and win the mile and a half contest on turf by a length and a quarter.

Red Rifle has now won four races and placed three times earning $242,520.

“Last time he got beat, Todd [Pletcher] and I were talking, and he said, ‘You know, it seems like he would like to go further, because he galloped out really good,’ and I said ‘I think so, because he keeps going, said winning rider John Velazquez.

“He doesn’t pick it up too fast, but he just keeps going. I think we should try it.’ We did, and it worked.”

A $250,000 Keeneland September purchase, Red Rifle runs for WinStar Farm and Twin Creeks Racing Stable and is from smart Grade II placed stakes-winner May Night.
