Former champion mare Private Steer produced her first winner at Canterbury on Friday night when Major Major (4g Encosta de Lago x Private Steer, by Danehill Dancer) saluted.
A four year-old gelding by Encosta de Lago, Major Major has improved steadily at each of his only three previous starts and finally joined the dots together to post his first win in the 1900 metre maiden.
Given time to mature by Grahame Begg, Major Major did best in a tight finish for Hugh Bowman to win by a head.
A $110,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Coolmore draft, Major Major runs for Alan Osburg and is the second living foal of Private Steer, who won 12 races and $3.4 million with highlight wins in the Group I AJC Doncaster Handicap, All Aged Stakes and QTC Stradbroke Handicap.
A half-sister by Danehill Dancer to dual Group I winner All Silent, Private Steer is now in the ownership of Fairway Thoroughbreds, who sold a yearling colt by Encosta de Lago from her in the Coolmore draft at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $235,000.
