Exciting colt Havana (2c Dunkirk x Missy Turtle, by Kyle’s Our Man) was having just his third race start in the Grade I Breeders Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita and beat all bar New Year’s Day in the prestigious juvenile feature.
The Todd Pletcher trained colt hit the front down the running, but could not hold off New Year’s Day in going down by a length and a quarter.
Havana was a $575,000 purchase for renowned bloodstock agent Demi O’Byrne from the Barretts March 2YO Sale where he ran the fastest furlong ever recorded at that sale when low flying his furlong in a tick over nine seconds.
He has raced three times now for two wins including the Grade I Belmont Champagne Stakes and looks a bright prospect for next year.
Raced by Michael Tabor, John Magnier & Derrick Smith, Havana is a half-brother to stakes-placed Among the Willows from Missy Turtle, a half-sister to stakes-winners Chief J Strongbow and Egghead.
Havana is the top performer to date of his young sire Dunkirk, who has made an auspicious start to his stud career this year.
