Giant's Causeway conformation

Progressive colt Russian Greek (3c Giant’s Causeway x Sand Dollar, by Grindstone) ended 2011 with his first stakes win and was back in form on the weekend to win the $100,520 California Derby at Golden Gate.

The Jerry Hollendorfer trained colt made it three wins from four starts when he forged clear to win the 1 and 1/16th mile feature by a length.

A $100,000 weanling purchase from the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, Russian Greek runs for Olympia Star and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Ocean Current from Sand Dollar, who is a half-sister to Grade I Breeders Cup Classic winner Cat Thief.

Giant’s Causeway also featured with a promising new winner when Segway (3c Giant’s Causeway x Slow Down, by Seattle Slew) scored on debut over a mile on turf at Santa Anita for Richard Mandella.

A homebred for Wertheimer and Frere, Segway is a half-brother to French stakes-winner Slow Pace from stakes-winning Seattle Slew mare Slow Down.
