Canford Cliffs, who has retired to stand at Coolmore in 2012, was the best older miler on the planet in 2011, according to both Timeform and the World Thoroughbred Rankings.
The five-year-old was given a rating of 133 from Timeform after a year in which he won the G1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and G1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he defeated Goldikova. He was rated 127 in the World Thoroughbred Rankings, which are traditionally a few pounds lower than Timeform’s ratings.
Canford Cliffs was described by his handler Richard Hannon as “without doubt the best horse I have had in over 40 years as a trainer”.
As a three-year-old, the horse was rated 131 by Timeform after winning the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas, G1 St James’s Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes while he achieved a mark of 122 at two, when he won the G2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot by six lengths.
