Exciting juvenile Creative Cause (2c Giant’s Causeway x Dream of Summer, by Siberian Summer) made it two wins in as many starts when coasting home to win the Grade II Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar.
The Mike Harrington trained colt earned TDN Rising Star status with a facile debut win at Hollywood Park last month and proved the merit of that assessment in this tougher assignment.
The grey was content to sit off the pace and then moved into contention in the straight before slipping away to win the six and half furlong contest by a length and three-quarters.
His time of 1:15.62 was the fastest for the Best Pal in the last five years since Del Mar switched to a Polytrack surface in 2007.
Winning rider Rafael Bejarano said he was concerned about getting Creative Cause away from the gate out of post 2 without a problem.
“But he was really relaxed,” he said. “I had my perfect position. Then he showed me a big kick, like he did in his debut. He has a lot more to give. After this race, he’ll improve a lot.”
Next on the agenda for Creative Cause is likely to be a tilt at the Grade I Del Mar Futurity on September 7.
A $135,000 Keeneland September Yearling purchase, Creative Cause is raced by Heinz Steinmann and is from Grade I Apple Blossom Handicap winner Dream of Summer.
Creative Cause is the 99th stakes-winner for champion sire Giant’s Causeway.
