Creative Cause on Track for Kentucky Derby

Top class colt Creative Cause (3c Giant’s Causeway x Dream of Summer, by Siberian Summer) confirmed his Kentucky Derby potential when powering clear to win the Grade II $300,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita.

Winner of the Grade I Norfolk Stakes last year, the Mike Harrington trained colt showed he was back in top form when despite racing waywardly in the stretch, he was able to surge home and win the 1 and 1/16th mile contest by three-quarters of a length.

“The race set up perfect today,” said winning rider Joel Rosario.

“There were a couple horses with speed up front, and when I saw that I just let him find his stride and go from there. My horse was a little green at the top of the lane, but I wanted to make sure that he didn’t wait for another horse to come beat him. He galloped out good after the wire, which helps to show he may be the right horse for the Derby. That means a lot to me. I’m happy to get a chance to ride in it, and I want to win the race.”

Mike Harrington was delighted with the win and is now looking ahead to the Kentucky Derby with another Derby goal before he heads to Churchill Downs.

“I guess any win is good. They’ve got to work if they win it. This horse will run back in the Santa Anita Derby (April 7),” he said.

A $135,000 Keeneland September Yearling purchase, Creative Cause has won four races and placed three times from seven starts earning $719,000.

He is raced by Heinz Steinmann and is from Grade I Apple Blossom Handicap winner Dream of Summer.
