Progressive three year-old Daddy Nose Best (3c Scat Daddy x Follow Your Bliss, by Thunder Gulch) added another Derby to his resume when taking out the Grade III $800,000 Sunland Derby on the weekend.
Winner of the Grade III El Camino Real Derby at his previous start, the Steve Asmussen trained colt settled back off a red hot early pace that saw the first half mile run in 46:24 seconds.
He rolled into the race from the turn and found the line strongly to win the 1 1/8 mile contest by three-quarters of a length, his overall record now four wins and three placings from 10 starts with prizemoney of $633,623.
“He ran a really good race,” said winning trainer Steve Asmussen.
“Julien [Leparoux] gave him a great ride, and I’m very glad to see this horse have success in a race of this level. It also means a lot to me to win a race here [near El Paso]. I spent a lot of time here as a youth, so it’s great to finally win the big race.
“We felt good about the pace scenario with him having won at this distance already. He worked really hard to get by the local horse, but he got it done today. We came here trying to get him into the [GI] Kentucky Derby, and with him having success at the longer distances we feel really good about it.”
A $35,000 purchase from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Daddy Nose Best is raced by Bob and Cathy Zollars.
He is one of six stakes-winners for Scat Daddy and is the second winner for Follow My Bliss, a daughter of Grade II winner Follow the Money.
