Dick Whittington stars for Rip Van Winkle

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Dick Whittington (2c Rip Van Winkle-Sahara Sky, by Danehill) looked a high-class prospect when becoming Rip Van Winkle’s latest first-crop winner at Navan on Saturday.

The Swordlestown Stud-bred colt, a 280,000 euros yearling, broke his duck in some style when running away with the six-furlong contest by four and a quarter lengths.

Dick Whittington is still engaged in the G2 Coventry Stakes and G2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot next week and winning rider Joseph O’Brien told irishracing.com: “The ground was too soft for him last time out and he wouldn’t be out of place next week.”
