Promising colt Cosmo Charlie (3c Stay Thirsty x Lake Como, by Salt Lake) landed a Black type success at Meydan in Dubai when taking out the $250,000 Al Bastakiya Sponsored by Emirates Skywards Stakes.

Trained by Doug Watson, Cosmo Charlie rebounded from an unplaced run at his previous start in the Grade III UAE Two Thousand Guineas to lead throughout and win the nine and a half furlong contest by a length.

“He didn’t know what to do the last day, he was quite immature, and the plan was to go forward and if he didn’t stay, he didn’t stay,” said winning rider Pat Dobbs.

“He’s a quick learner but a funny little horse. I thought there was a doubt he’d stay, but Doug [Watson] said his father stayed, and he would stay.”

With two wins and a second from four starts, Cosmo Charlie will now head towards the Grade II UAE Derby on March 25.

“He is a nice little horse and we go to the UAE Derby with him,” said Doug Watson.

“He broke poorly in the Guineas, which messed up the whole race for him but we still had confidence in him as he galloped really well, so we were hopeful.”

A half-brother to stakes-placed Aliana, Cosmo Charlie is the fifth winner from Lake Como and was purchased for $85,000 from the Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale.

Cosmo Charlie is the second stakes-winner for exciting young sire Stay Thirsty, whose oldest progeny are just three year-olds.
