Duke of Marmalade Filly Impresses

Breaking her maiden in good style Randwick on Wednesday was the Chris Waller trained filly Marmelo (3f Duke of Marmalade x Apocrypha, by Octagonal) , who scored easily at her second start.

Third on debut earlier this month, Marmelo improved at her second outing to surge home from midfield to win over 1400 metres by half a length.

“She’s a talented filly,” said Chris Waller.

“She trialled well and her first run was great, but she took a lot of benefit from that coming into this.

“I really like the Duke of Marmalade’s, although she’s the first I’ve had. He was such a great older horse and hopefully she can follow on like that.”

A $45,000 Inglis Classic purchase for her trainer from the draft of Bell View Park, Marmelo runs for a syndicate of Waller stable clients as well as Bell View Park, who retained an interest in the filly.

She is the first winner for Apocrypha, a placed Octagonal daughter of Group I VRC Oaks winner Tributes, so Marmelo has the pedigree to suggest longer distances will be within her range as she matures.

Marmelo is from the first Australian crop of foals by Danehill five-time Group I winning son Duke of Marmalade, who is the leading European second season sire by winners and stakes-winners.
