A colt by Dylan Thomas was the star attraction during the opening session of the NZB Select Yearling Sale at Karaka in New Zealand on Wednesday.
Consigned for sale by Windsor Park Stud, the impressive colt from Mon Beau Cheval (Montjeu) was knocked down to the bid of Michael Stedman on behalf of bloodstock agent Dan O’Donnel for $190,000.
O’Donnel was acting for Hong Kong-based Cosmetics’ magnate Simon Kwok and has an affinity with the progeny of Dylan Thomas after purchasing Blazing Speed – the winner of the first leg of the 2014 Hong Kong Triple Crown, the HKG1 Steward’s Cup, – for clients at the Tattersalls Broodmare Sale.
“This horse has something about him and I like horses with a bit of difference,” O’Donnel said.
“He has a stayer’s pedigree although his attitude reminds me of Montjeu.
“I think Montjeu is a great sire who can throw a bit of spark into his horses and although he has a classic pedigree it brings with it the possibility of being competitive at that 1400-1600 metre journey.
The star colt is the second foal of Mon Beau Cheval, a full sister to Group I AJC Australian Derby winner Nom du Jeu.
