Former South African owner/breeder Lionel Cohen prepared his first metropolitan winner as a trainer when Aeronautical (2g Encosta de Lago x Moon Fever, by Fusaichi Pegasus) saluted in the open juvenile event over 1200 metres at Randwick on Saturday.
A well related gelding by Encosta de Lago from Moon Fever, Aeronautical had shown ability in his two previous starts albeit hampered by heavy tracks and lack of luck in running.
He finally put it altogether for this assignment, settling back in the field and charging home from last to win going away by more than a length.
Well known internationally as the owner of former star Aussie bred South African raced mare Sun Classique, Lionel Cohen said it has taken him time to adjust to the different racing conditions in Australia, but was thankful he had the opportunity to train here.
“South African racing is a bit different to here. I’m just grateful to be in Australia and have the opportunity to train here,” Cohen said.
“It’s very special. I must be honest with you closer to the race I started looking for others who could beat us, I was very confident today.
“I saw the betting getting out to 30-1 but that’s not of interest to me. I’ve always rated him highly.”
Aeronautical was a $100,000 purchase for Cohen from the Amarina Farm draft at the 2010 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and is the first winner for stakes-placed Fusaichi Pegasus mare Moon Fever, a daughter of Group I winner Stella Cadent from the family of Group I stars such as Bint Marscay, Bollinger, Filante, etc.
