Encosta Colt Wins Group One

Last season’s Champion South African Two Year Old Colt Delago Deluxe (3c Encosta de Lago x Succeeding, by Flying Spur) returned to top form in South Africa on Saturday, powering home to win the Group I Golden Horse Casino Sprint at Scottsville.

The Charles Laird trained son of Encosta de Lago raced up near the pace from barrier three for Anton Marcus and beat older horses to win the 1200 metre sprint by a length and a quarter, his overall record now an impressive seven wins from 11 starts.

It was the second Group I victory for the blue-blooded colt, who won the Gold Medallion over the same course at two.

Bred and offered for sale by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud, Delago Deluxe was purchased by his trainer Charles Laird for $550,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions Sale where he was the fourth highest priced colt at the sale.

Raced by Mr and Mrs Markus Jooste, Delago Deluxe is the second foal of Flying Spur mare Succeeding, a half-sister to Group I stars Duporth and Excites, plus Group II winner Tickets.

Succeeding was covered again by champion sire Encosta de Lago last year so will be expecting a full sibling to Delago Deluxe in the spring.
