Hoybell (3f Encosta de Lago x Satinka, by Stravinsky) was the only three year-old filly against a big field of seasoned older horses, but that didn’t stop this blue-blooded filly scoring a tenacious win at the ATC meeting at Newcastle on Wednesday.
The Chris Waller trained daughter of Encosta de Lago was ridden a patient race by Hugh Bowman, settling back midfield before working into the clear and surging home to win the 1600 metre Benchmark 70 event by a short half head.
“It’s good to see these types of fillies take that next step up,” said Chris Waller.
“I thought the win had plenty of merit as she’s beaten older horses and the opposite sex.
“I’m thinking about the Keith Nolan (Group III) at Kembla in a couple of weeks, although we’ll just take it one step at a time.”
Hoybell was a $690,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Ingham Racing and has won three of five starts earning nearly $90,000 in prizemoney.
Consigned by Willow Park Stud, Hoybell is the first foal of former top class Kiwi filly Satinka, winner of the Group II Eight Carat Classic and Royal Stakes.
Chris Waller would have had a keen interest in this filly when she arrived at his stables as her mother Satinka is a half-sister to the dam of his great stable favourite Rangirangdoo, a $2million earner with highlight wins in the Group I AJC Doncaster Handicap and ATC George Ryder Stakes.
