The most expensive yearling by High Chaparral sold in Australia in 2013, Fenway (3f High Chaparral x Deedra, by Zabeel) scored an eye-catching debut win at Bendigo on Thursday.
A $700,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Colm Santry Bloodstock from the Strawberry Hill Stud draft, Fenway opened her account with a dominant two length win in the 1400 metre maiden.
Prepared by Lee and Shannon Hope, Fenway was allowed to find her feet back in the field after jumping from an outside gate for Damien Oliver and when shown clear running on the home turn quickly loomed into contention.
She sustained a long finishing run to sail past the leaders and win with authority.
Entered for the Group I VRC Oaks, Fenway is raced by Greg White’s Alpara Lodge and is certainly a filly bred with Oaks goals in mind.
She is a half-sister to Group III winner War and is the second winner for blue-blooded Zabeel mare Deedra, a sibling to multiple Group I winners Tuesday Joy and Sunday Joy, the dam of champion mare More Joyous.
Deedra’s dam Joie Denise and grand-dam Denise’s Joy are both Oaks winners, so it’s not hard to see why the Oaks dream would be well and truly alive for this filly, albeit maybe more for the autumn than spring!
