Exciting Return for Niblick

Embarking on a new campaign at Flemington on Saturday was classy gelding Niblick (5g Encosta de Lago x Leica Vista, by Sir Tristram) , who steamed home to win the Listed VRC Sofitel Stakes for the Lloyd Williams team.

Resuming from a spell of 17 weeks, the Robert Hickmott trained Niblick enjoyed a clear passage up the straight and made the most of it, surging home to win the 1400 metre event by a length and a half, taking his overall record to an impressive six wins and three placings from 13 starts with prizemoney of $245,625.

“In the autumn he had problems with his feet – a foot abscess I think it was – and he put in a few indifferent runs,” Nick Williams reported post-race.

“I think we’ll the best of him over the spring.

“We just wanted to get him back to the track and get him back winning -he’s done the job today – it’s all good.”

Bred and sold by Swettenham Stud, Niblick fetched $220,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and is a half-brother to Group II winner Moon Dragon and is one of five winners from stakes-placed Sir Tristrammare Leica Vista, a half-sister to Group I winner Leica Smile.

Niblick is the 86th stakes-winner for champion sire Encosta de Lago, who stands this spring at a fee of $110,000.
