Fastnet Rock filly Diamondsandrubies (3f Fastnet Rock-Quarter Moon, by Sadler´s Wells) gained compensation for a luckless run in the G1 Oaks at Epsom when winning the G1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

Seamie Heffernan got the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly up to win the prestigious contest from G1 1,000 Guineas heroine Legatissimo.

“I rode her in Epsom and it didn’t really swing my way. Sometimes Epsom finishes a horse and sometimes the good horses thrive on it. She’s obviously good,” Heffernan told irishracing.com

“She was a bit unlucky at Epsom. Aidan trains them to progress from run to run and today she was at her best so hopefully there will be more improvement.”

O’Brien added: “She was very unlucky at Epsom and was probably the most inconvenienced by the whole thing. “We’d like to have got a lead but that’s not the way it worked out, and Seamie gave her a great ride.

“We know the dam, Quarter Moon, well and I’m delighted for (joint-owners) Richard and Roisin (Henry).”

Diamondsandrubies is likely to head next to the G1 Irish Oaks for which she is now 5/2 favourite with bookmakers.

A sensational weekend for Canford Cliffs continued on Sunday when rugby legend Ronan O’Gara’s colours were carried to victory by Most Beautiful (2f Canford Cliffs-Saphira’s Fire, by Cape Cross) in the G3 Grangecon Stud Stakes at The Curragh.

An impressive Navan maiden winner on her previous run, the David Wachman-trained filly took the step up to Group company in her stride.

“She’s always worked like a good filly. She’s big and is still a bit weak, you could see that in the last furlong. She has a nice future,” said Wachman. “Ronan couldn’t be here today as he’s on a family holiday in the south of France but I’d say he won’t miss the next day wherever that is.

“She’s well-entered up and will go further. The one thing is she likes goodish ground.”

The Horizon Bloodstock-bred Most Beautiful, a 120,000gns yearling, was winning a day after Painted Cliffs (2c Canford Cliffs-Lulawin, by Kyllachy) won the G2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh.

Painted Cliffs (2c Canford Cliffs-Lulawin, by Kyllachy) gave the exciting first-crop sire Canford Cliffs a runaway Group winer on Saturday night when taking the G2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh.

Ryan Moore, aboard Painted Cliffs, took the lead a furlong and a half from home and eventually came home two and three-quarter lengths clear of the field. The Richard Hannon-trained Log Out Island was a further length and a quarter back in third.

“I was very impressed with him. He travelled very well and I thought really I just had the Godolphin horse (Log Out Island) to beat. I got him off the bridle and I was there too soon. It was impressive. He’s a nice colt,” said Moore.

Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien added: “We liked him before he ever ran but he disappointed the first day and Joseph (O’Brien) said he was very idle and babyish. Ryan said he’s a very nice horse. He likes him.”

Painted Cliffs, a €200,000 yearling bred by Lisieux Stud, was quoted at 25/1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas by bookmakers following the win.

Trainer Roger Varian is planning a step up in class for Canford Cliffs juvenile Aneesah (2f Canford Cliffs-Decorative, by Danehill Dancer) following the filly’s victory at Chester on Friday night.

Philip Makin bided his time aboard the two-year-old, carrying the colours of Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar, before getting up late to claim the seven-furlong maiden.

Writing on his website, Varian commented: “Aneesah has always shown plenty at home and has stepped up from her debut. She was value for a bit more that the winning margin and we shall probably look to get some ‘black type’ with her now.”

Aneesah, who picked up a Plus 10 bonus with this victory, is a £180,000 yearling who was bred by Highclere Stud. She is pictured (nearside) working on Warren Hill  at Newmarket (courtesy of rogervarian.com).
