A sire sensation in South America, Scat Daddy showed his dominance again with a Grade I double at Club Hipico de Santiago in Chile where the Clasico Polla de Potrillos was won by Flyer (3c Scat Daddy x Fantastic Snow, by Fantastic Light) and the Clasico Polla de Potrancas produced a trifecta for Scat Daddy with Kitcat (3f Scat Daddy x Kossanova, by Fly So Free) leading the way.

A full brother to Grade I winner Fantasmagorico, the Guillermo Aguirre trained Flyer forged clear to win the 1700 metre turf contest by a length, his second win in six starts.

Kitcat is also a full sibling to a Grade I winner in Knockout and is the third Grade I winner for her dam Kossanova.

Trained by Juan C Silva, she scored by a length over Wapi (3f Scat Daddy x We Can Leave, by Seeker’s Reward) with Cimalta (3f Scat Daddy x La Cimarra, by Northair) in third place.

Kitcat has three wins and three seconds from six starts.

Flyer and Kitcat are the 13th and 14th Grade I winners for Scat Daddy.

Top class mare Stopchargingmaria (4m Tale of the Cat x Exotic Bloom, by Montbrook) was in top form at Saratoga on Sunday taking out the $200,000 Grade III Shuvee Stakes.

A dual Grade I winner last year for the Todd Pletcher stable, Stopchargingmaria was sent to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Breeding Stock Sale last year by her owner Mike Repole, but left the ring unsold when bidding stalled at $3.15 million.

A daughter of outstanding sire Tale of the Cat, she was later sold privately to Louise and Kiki Courtelis’s Town and Country Farms, who decided to leave her with Todd Pletcher to race on.

A last start winner for her new owners in the Grade III Allaire DuPont Distaff at Saratoga, Stopchargingmaria repeated the effort to surge clear and win this 1 and 1/18th mile feature by a length over the favourite Untapable.

“You can see in Stopchargingmaria’s personality that she loves it here at Saratoga,” said Todd Pletcher.

“I was impressed that she battled down to the wire with Untapable. Our strategy was that we were going to try to get to the front, and Untapable came in with the same strategy. We knew our filly had been training exceptionally well and have been looking forward to this race. I was very proud of her today.”

Stopchargingmaria has the overall record of eight wins and four placings from 14 starts with prizemoney topping $1.7 million and is the first winner for stakes-winner Exotic Bloom, who comes from the family of Grade II winners Vision and Verse and Bourbon Bay.

Sir Robert Ogden’s home-bred Amazing Maria (4f Mastercraftsman-Messias Da Silva, by Tale Of The Cat) confirmed herself one of Europe’s best fillies of 2015 when seeing off a top-class field to win the G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville on Sunday.

The David O’Meara-trained filly had already won the G1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket and G2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes this season before heading to France.

Partnered by Olivier Peslier, she came with a decisive run in the final furlong to beat dual G1-winning three-year-old Ervedya by a length and a quarter.

“She was unbelievable today,” O’Meara told TDN. “She is obviously a very good filly. There was probably some doubt about whether she was truly a G1 filly after Ascot, but she’s done it again twice since then and you’d have to say she’s among the best fillies in Europe now.”

Peslier, who won the race four times aboard Goldikova, was similarly full of praise for his mount, adding: “She lives up to her name. I had hardly moved on her two furlongs out and when she was in the clear and I asked her she quickened and did it very easily. Obviously, she is an improving sort and I’d imagine she is not at the end of the line yet as that was a very convincing victory which brought back great memories.”

Quality colt Madefromlucky (3c Lookin at Lucky x Home from Oz, by Pulpit) scored a lucrative win in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Racetrack and Resort on Saturday.

Second and fourth behind Kentucky Derby winner American Pharoah in the Grade II Rebel Stakes and Grade I Arkansas Derby, the Todd Pletcher trained Madefromlucky has blossomed since then winning the Grade II Peter Pan Stakes before finishing sixth to American Pharoah in the Grade I Belmont.

Drawn wide, Madefromlucky covered ground in the run but still proved too good when he forged clear to win the 1 and 1/8th mile contest by a length and a half, taking his overall record to four wins and three placings from 10 starts with prizemoney topping $875,000.

“He’s a special horse,” said winning part-owner Mac Nichol.

“We’ve known that for a long time. We were looking forward to him running a big race today, because we thought this race would suit him and it didn’t hurt that we didn’t have to worry about American Pharoah.”

A half-brother to stakes-placed A Shin Gold from a full sister to champion sire Tapit, Madefromlucky was a $70,000 Keeneland September purchase that was re-sold for $150,000 at the OBS March 2YO Sale.

Madefromlucky is one of four stakes-winners this year for champion Two and Three Year-Old Lookin at Lucky, joining Maybellene, Breaking Lucky and Four Leaf Chief.

Lookin at Lucky has passed his barn mate Munnings to take over as Leading US Second Crop Sire by earnings.

Talented stayer Red Rifle (5g Giant’s Causeway x May Night, by Gulch) claimed another feature win in the $250,000 Grade II Bowling Green Handicap at Saratoga on the weekend.

A last start winner of the Grade III Dominion Day Stakes at Woodbine, the Todd Pletcher trained Red Rifle was ridden off the pace and surged through a gap to coast clear and win the 1 and 3/8th mile contest on turf by two and a half lengths.

“Beautiful trip–perfect trip,” said winning rider Javier Castellano.

“I was able to take advantage all the way inside on the rail. In a long distance, on the grass, the most important thing is to save all the ground. And that’s exactly what I did. He did it very professionally today and I’m very satisfied with the way he did it.”

Todd Pletcher will consider a variety of options for the versatile son of champion sire Giant’s Causeway, who is effective on all surfaces.

“I think he’s just maturing, mentally and physically. He’s really just found his groove this year,” he said.

“He’s now won big races on three different surfaces. He’s just a throwback kind of horse, he’s hardy, he’s tough. He’s a gelding now, we just need to look at the opportunities and place him where he fits. He won the Hawthorne Gold Cup last year, he just won a race on Polytrack at Woodbine and now on the turf. All options are on the table.”

Red Rifle has now won seven races and placed six times from 19 starts earning just shy of $700,000

A $250,000 Keeneland September purchase, Red Rifle is from smart Grade II placed stakes-winner May Night.

Light Up Our World (2f Zoffany-Shine Like A Star, by Fantastic Light) looked another high-class prospect for Zoffany when winning a classy maiden for trainer Richard Hannon at Newmarket on Saturday.

Derek Boocock’s home-bred, who had finished second on her debut at Ascot, saw off 10 rivals to win the seven-furlong maiden under Pat Dobbs.

“Light Up Our World ran well first time and learned a lot from that race. They only went steady and she picked up well. She´s still a weak filly and will be better next year when she´s strengthened up,” Dobbs told the Racing Post.

The fabulous Canford Cliffs had another first-crop stakes success at Deauville on Saturday when Aktoria (2f Canford Cliffs-Granadilla, by Zafonic) scored for trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias.

Leonidas Marinopolous’ home-bred filly came home a length and a quarter clear of her rivals to take the seven-furlong Listed Prix Six Pefections. Connections see the filly as an exciting long-term prospect.

“She did this easily enough today,” Laffon-Parias told JDG. “She should have won on her debut and then she was ill and unlucky. She’s one of my best two-year-old fillies and, while she could run in the G3 Prix du Calvados, I’m more likely to wait longer for her comeback.”

Aktoria was a third stakes winner for Canford Cliffs following G2 Railway Stakes victor Painted Cliffs (2c Canford Cliffs- Lulawin, by Kyllachy and Most Beautiful (2f Canford Cliffs -Saphira´s Fire, by Cape Cross), who landed the G3 Grangecon Stud Stakes.

The winners continue to flood in for Canford Cliffs, who had another maiden success at Beverley on Tuesday when Garden World (2f Canford Cliffs-Elizabeth Swann, by Bahamian Bounty) broke her maiden.

Meanwhile on Saturday, the Richard Hannon-trained Holy Grail (2f Canford Cliffs-Dashing Beauty, by Daggers Drawn) landed arguably the most-competitive nursery of the season, a £40,000 event at Newmarket.

Choisir has just completed a personal best season in which he sired 152 Australian winners to be second on the leading sires by winners list and one of those winners was promising  three year-old Japonisme (3g Choisir x Haiku, by Encosta de Lago), who scored another dominant victory at Rosehill on Saturday.

A homebred for the Ingham family, Japonisme has been in hot form since being gelded, reeling off three consecutive metropolitan wins for the Chris Waller stable.

Ridden by Nash Rawiller, the handsome chestnut gave nothing else a chance when opening up to win the 1100 metre dash by four lengths under 59 kg as a hot favourite.

Although he is entered for the Group I ATC Golden Rose on September 12, Chris Waller feels the 1400 metre may not be ideal a this stage of his career.

“We’re very happy, we often see a horse like this come through every six months from a big stable like ours but you’re never really sure until they do it on raceday,” Waller said.

“Carrying a big weight today, he had to improve to win and it just shows that he’s a good sprinter.

“I’ll keep him to short distances. On what he’s shown me, a race like the Golden Rose over 1400 metres, I wouldn’t be confident, so we’ll look at the short races and see what unfolds.”

The logical next target would appear to be the Group III ATC San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill in two weeks time.

Japonisme now has the overall record now three wins and two placings from six starts with prizemoney topping $180,000.

A homebred for the Ingham family, Japonisme is the second foal and second winner for Encosta de Lago mare Haiku, a half-sister to Group I New Zealand Oaks winner Tapildo and Group II STC Silver Slipper winner Plagiarize.

The Australian racing season for 2014/2015 has come to an end with Fastnet Rock crowned Champion Australian Sire by earnings and stakes-winners, his sire Danehill the Champion Australian Broodmare Sire and his sire sons Hinchinbrook and Rothesay the leading first season sires by earnings and winners respectively.

It’s been a ground breaking year for Fastnet Rock with seasonal progeny earnings in Australia topping $10.3 million and 15 stakes-winners headed by Group I winners First Seal, Amicus and Magicool.

First Seal and Amicus both trialled in promising fashion at Randwick on Friday morning and look poised for successful spring campaigns as four year-old mares.

Aside from his success in Australia, Fastnet Rock has also sired Group I winners in the Northern Hemisphere courtesy of his star three year-old fillies Qualify (Epsom Oaks) and Diamondsandrubies (Pretty Polly Stakes).

Three year-olds have also been the backbone of his success in Australia this season providing 54 of his winners and $4.7 million of his earnings.

Turning 14 this year, Fastnet Rock won the title of Champion Australian Sire previously in 2011/2012, but is now at the very height of his powers.

With more big crops of top quality youngsters coming through, Fastnet Rock may well be on the cusp of a period of dominance at the top of the Australian General Sires List.
