Blessed with well above average ability, but at times a source of frustration, Frac Daddy (4h Scat Daddy x Skippers’ Mate, by Skip Away) finally put it altogether to win his first Black Type event when saluting in the $150,000 Grade III Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday.
Second in the Grade I Arkansas Derby at three, Frac Daddy disappointed in subsequent Grade I outings last year, but trainer Kenny McPeek was confident he had the entire ready for this assignment.
He broke fast from an outside gate and travelled strongly all the way before cruising home to win the 1 and 1/8th mile event by four and three-quarter lengths.
“He’s been training freaky good lately,” saidMcPeek.
“From the beginning, he’s been an extremely talented horse, but mentally he was a horse that was a little fragile.”
The 28th stakes-winner for Scat Daddy, Frac Daddy has the overall record of four wins and five seconds from 14 starts with prizemoney of $515,280, representing a good return on his $50,000 purchase price at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
