Exciting young sire Dunkirk has had several smart winners this year and Dunkin Bend (3c Dunkirk x Misty Run, by Vindication) had the honour of providing his sire with his first stakes-winner when saluting in the Grade III Sapling Stakes at Monmouth on Sunday.
Second on debut and then an easy winner at Saratoga on August 3, the Steve Asmussen trained colt raised the bar again for this assignment sitting just off the leaders and then charging home to win the six furlong dash by a length and a quarter.
“I saw two horses going to the front so I settled him just off of that,” said winning rider Ricardo Santana Jr.
“He relaxed very nice and made a good move around the turn. We were a little wide, but when I asked him, he kicked on and held well.”
A $53,000 Keeneland September Yearling purchase, who then made $110,000 at the OBS April 2YO Sale, Dunkin Bend runs for Michael Langford.
Grey in colour like his sire, Dunkin Bend is the first stakes-winner for his dam Misty Run, an unraced daughter of stakes-winner Unique Creek.
A $3.7 million yearling, who was Group I placed from a limited number of starts, Dunkirk has sired five first crop winners with Dunkin Bend the first stakes-winner.
