Talented mare Abaco (6m Giant’s Causeway x Cat Cay, by Pleasant Colony) scored her biggest win to date when taking out the $250,000 Group II Ballston Spa Stakes at Saratoga.
A homebred for the Phipps stable prepared by Shug McGaughey, Abaco powered home from the back of the field to score a determined neck win in the 1 and 1/16th mile event on turf.
“I didn’t know if she would get there or not, but I liked the way she was positioned the whole race,” said Shug McGaughey.
“She’s trained really well, she’s done really well up here. I watched her the other day and said to my assistant, ‘She’s never looked this good.'”
By champion sire Giant’s Causeway, Abaco has won six of 24 starts earning in excess of $660,000 and is the best of four winners from Grade II winner Cat Cay, a half-sister to Grade I winner Strolling Along.
