Champion sire Giant’s Causeway posted a notable double on Saturday with Red Rifle (4g Giant’s Causeway x May Night, by Gulch) winning the $250,000 Grade II Hawthorne Gold Cup and Big Cazanova (5h Giant’s Causeway x Gem Bob, by Morning Bob) taking the Grade III Del Mar Native Diver Stakes.
The Todd Pletcher trained Red Rifle again showed good stamina to lead and then forge clear to win the mile and a quarter contest by two and a quarter lengths.
Already a stakes-winner, Red Rifle has now won five races and placed second four times from just 13 starts earning $412,520.
A $250,000 Keeneland September purchase, Red Rifle runs for WinStar Farm and Twin Creeks Racing Stable and is from smart Grade II placed stakes-winner May Night.
An Argentinian bred son of Giant’s Causeway, Big Casanova (pictured) opened his Black Type account with a three and a quarter length win in the $200,500 Native Diver Stakes run over 1 and 1/18th mile.
Now with Peter Miller after campaigning in Peru and Argentina, Big Casanova was Grade I placed in South America, but this was his first stakes victory, his overall record now four wins and 12 placings from 20 starts.
The 146th stakes-winner for Giant’s Causeway, Big Casanova is a half-brother to South American Grade I winner Best Bob.
