The Gai Waterhouse trained Kabayan (2g Haradasun x Tarlaquena, by Don Eduardo) failed by a short head to give his sire Haradasun his first Group I winner when finishing a desperately close second to Sizzling in the Group I BRC TJ Smith Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Having just his third race start following on from a debut win at Wyong and then a gallant second to highly rated Fastnet Rock colt Destruction, Kabayan ran the race of his life in the 1600 metre feature.
Superbly ridden by Nash Rawiller, he was up running second throughout behind tearaway leader Boban and had the race won everywhere bar the post with red hot favourite Sizzling claiming him in the last strides of the race.
“It’s great to see a local horse like Sizzling win,” Gai Waterhouse said in her post race remarks.
“But you’ve just seen a great horse in the making from Kabayan. I thought 200 metres out he was going to win until I saw that blasted Chris Munce (on Sizzling) coming.
“Kabayan is a really top horse and I’ll set him for the Caulfield Guineas.”
The first foal of Don Eduardo mare Tarlaquena (NZ), Kabayan is closely related to smart performers Matras, Zutara and Ashikaga.
Kabayan is one of five winners from the first crop of Haradsun, who stands this season at a fee of $16,500.
