Champion sire Encosta de Lago featured with a new stakes-winner in Perth on Saturday when blue-blooded five year-old Maschino (5h Encosta de Lago x Tahni Girl, by Redoute’s Choice) captured the Group IIIWATC RJ Peters Stakes.
Prepared at Bunbury by Graham Yuill, Maschino had been placed at his last couple of runs in stakes company and needed to win this event to assure a start in next Saturday’s Group I Carlton Draught Railway Stakes.
He produced a strong finishing burst for Jarrad Noske to win the 1500 metre contest by a length over another Encosta de Lago in Niblick, his overall record now seven wins from 19 starts with prizemoney in excess of $270,000.
“We’re very happy to be there (in the Railway), it’s been our goal the whole way along and for it to come to fruition is just wonderful,” Yuill said.
Yuill stated post-race he had been happy with the horse’s three previous runs this campaign and it was just a matter of keeping him ticking over.
“We’ve known all along he wanted fifteen, sixteen hundred metres and they did well up front with the speed and it was a great ride by Jarrad,” Yuill said.
Bred by Dean Fleming, Maschino was a $240,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the draft of Tyreel Stud and is the second foal of Group III winning Redoute’s Choice mare Tahni Girl, a half-sister to stakes-winners Just Dancing and Hidden Dragon from former champion NZ two year-old and triple Group I winner Ballroom Babe.
Tahni Girl has foaled this spring producing a colt by High Chaparral.
Maschino is the 93rd stakes-winner for evergreen sire Encosta de Lago.
