Talented gelding Riva de Lago (6g Encosta de Lago x Ashenti, by Ashkalani) has been thereabouts in a number of good stakes races since the start of the year and found his turn to shine in the Group II ATC Sebring Theo Marks Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.
Having his second run back from a spell, the Chris Waller trained six year-old charged to the line for Jim Cassidy to win the 1400 metre feature by a dominant two and a half lengths.
“He was in his right race today,” Waller said.
“He’s nominated for the Epsom and the way he raced today, he looks like he’ll run a mile, so he deserves his chance.”
Passed in at the Magic Millions when offered by Baramul Stud, Riva de Lago was retained to race by his breeder Gerry Harvey in partnership with Franco Ferrari and has the overall record of seven wins and eight placings from 27 starts with prizemoney of $528,830.
He is the first foal of Group II placed Ashkalani mare Ashenti, who comes from the family of Group I winner Not Related.
Ashenti is due to foal again to Encosta de Lago again this spring.
Riva de Lago is the 95th stakes-winner for champion sire Encosta de Lago, who stands at a fee of $55,000 this year.
