The fillies maiden at Warwick Farm on Wednesday featured a strong field on paper with lightly raced filly Canossa (3f Haradasun x Liguria, by Elusive Quality) proving successful.
The Chris Waller trained Canossa was sent out favourite on the strength of a good recent barrier trial win and handy efforts in similar grade at her first three starts last preparation.
She showed the benefit of maturity and race experience when fighting on too strongly for Jim Cassidy to win the 1400 metre contest by a nose in a thrilling finish.
A $40,000 Magic Millions purchase for Grand Parkview Stud from the draft of Sledmere Stud, Canossa is the first foal of Liguria, an unraced Elusive Quality (USA) daughter of stakes-winner Lady of the Desert, whose grand-dam is New Zealand Oaks winner Solveig.
Haradasun’s star three year-old Prince Harada (3c Haradasun x Potential Princess, by Elusive Quality) is an acceptor this Saturday for the Group III MRC Manfred Stakes at Caulfield.
The Tony Vasil trained colt has not been since finishing sixth in the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas.
