Trainer John Gosden is eyeing the G1 Derby with Western Hymn (3c High Chaparral-Blue Rhapsody, by Cape Cross) after the unbeaten High Chaparral colt made a sparkling seasonal comeback at Newbury on Friday.
Jockey William Buick coasted to a two and a quarter lengths success in the 10-furlong conditions event prompting bookmakers to slash the Newsells Park Stud-bred Western Hymn’s odds to just 14/1 for the Derby.
“He’s a nice horse,” said Gosden. “This was a good graduation race for an immature horse who is still learning. It’s still early days but I liked what he did today. He relaxed well. We’ll take the next rung up the ladder and look at the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown in a couple of weeks and after that we could see about the Dante before that dreaded day at Epsom!”
Buick added: “He’s still green and there is more to come from him physically as well as mentally. He’s obviously near the top of our three-year-olds.”
