Hong Kong Derby Contender for Haradasun

Winner of the Group II ATC Stan Fox Stakes last season, talented performer Kabayan (4g Haradasun x Tarlaquena, by Don Eduardo) broke through for his first win in Hong Kong on Sunday when saluting at Sha Tin.

A Gooree Stud homebred previously trained by Gai Waterhouse, Kabayan was sold to Hong Kong and is now with the powerful John Moore stable.

He’s taken a while to find his best form, but two recent second placings showed he was heading in the right direction and on Sunday he powered home after missing the start to win the Class Two event over 1600 metres by a neck.

“He was going to jump perfectly, but as they were about to let them go he was just about to rear up, and he still missed the jump,” winning rider Joao Moreira told South China Morning Post.

“In saying that, he jumped better than he usually does and he was able to put himself in a good position. Then at the top of the straight, I had to wait a little bit before the gap opened beautifully for me.”

John Moore revealed plans to aim Kabayan towards the upcoming Hong Kong Derby HK Gr 1 on March 16.

“He won off [a rating of] 84 today, he should get around six points which would take him to 90 and that should just about get him into the Derby,” Moore said.

“That’s what we bought him for, and he’s just looking for ground.”

A son of champion miler Haradasun, Kabayan is the first foal of Don Eduardo mare Tarlaquena (NZ), a three-quarter sister to Group III winner Matras and daughter of Group II winner Tropical Affair.
