Trainer Jamie Osborne and owner Michael Buckley have big plans for Toast Of New York (3c Thewayyouare-Claire Soleil, Syncline), who has won his last two starts by an aggregate of 28 lengths.
The son of Thewayyouare, bred in Kentucky by Ashleigh Stud and Frank and Jackie Ramos, is held in high regard by connections. After running in the UAE Derby in Dubai on March 29, Osborne is planning to send the colt on a trip to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.
Toast Of New York has won his last two starts at Wolverhampton by 16 lengths and 12 lengths and Osborne believes a step up in grade is now deserved.
“He’s probably the first horse to go from Wolverhampton to Meydan to Churchill Downs. It’s an interesting route,” Osborne told Attheraces. “We’re trying to get him ready for the UAE Derby. I hope he gets in and the plan would be to go there. He’s performed very well on an artificial surface and I should think nine furlongs around there (Meydan) is made for him.
“I’m lucky to have had one Group 1 winner and I haven’t had a horse again until this one that I can get ambitious with. He’s pretty good. He’s got a fair bit of dirt on the dam’s side of his pedigree and is by Thewayyouare who I think is a very under-rated stallion.
“The American thing is a big dream but the UAE Derby is not a pipe dream. I think it’s a realistic target with him.”
