German 2,000 Guineas hero Lucky Lion (3c High Chaparral-Lips Arrow, by Big Shuffle) brought another top-level success for High Chaparral when scoring in Munich on Sunday.
The outstanding three-year-old took the all-aged 10-furlong G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis by half a length from previous G1 winner Noble Mission (5h Galileo-Kind, by Danehill) and may now head to the G2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville in August.
Trained by Andreas Lowe for Gestut Winterhauch, the Stall Parthenaue-bred Lucky Lion had earlier scored in G3 company in April before easily capturing the German Guineas in May.
“That was fantastic and he showed today this is his right trip. If he gets over this race quickly enough we shall go for the Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville as he gets no penalty there,” Lowe told the Racing Post.
It was another red-letter day for High Chaparral with the James Fanshawe-trained High Jinx (6g High Chaparral-Leonara, by Surumu) landing the Listed Prix du Carrrousel at Maisons-Laffitte.
The six-year-old, bred by Haras de la Perelle, battled gamely to win under Christophe Soumillon and is set to head to the G2 Lonsdale Cup at York, in which he finished second in 2012.
“I wanted to find him a race he could win, and he’s French-bred, so there was a premium,” said Fanshawe. “Christophe gave him a lovely ride and he pretty much made all, battling on really well after looking for a moment as if he might get outpaced.
“Hopefully he has his confidence back and he’ll now go for the Lonsdale Cup as he loves York.”
