More Scat Daddy Success

Spanish Pipedream (Scat Daddy) winning at Gulfstream

Talented filly Spanish Pipedream (3f Scat Daddy x Doc’s Leading Lady, Doc’s Leader) added another Black Type win to her resume when taking out the $50,000 Holiday Inaugural Stakes at Turfway Park on Saturday night.

Prepared by Wesley Ward, Spanish Pipedream bolted in on debut at Keeneland last April before going across to the UK for the Group II Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Fourth in that assignment, Spanish Pipedream had an extended break after that, but has been racing well this year winning the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at Turfway back in February.

Having her first run since April, she was sent to the front and held on strongly to win the six furlong sprint by a neck, her fourth win from just six starts.

A $125,000 Fasig-Tipton July Sale purchase, Spanish Pipedream is the second winner for Doc’s Leading Lady, a full sister to Grade III winner Phi Beta Doc.

Scat Daddy also had a couple of smart juvenile winners on the weekend with Celestial Insight (2f Scat Daddy x Bai and Bai, by Falstaff) making it two wins in as many starts when scoring at Turfway, while the Todd Pletcher trained Daring Bride (2f Scat Daddy x Darling Bride, by Unbridled) posted a resounding debut victory at Gulfstream.

Daring Bride bolted away to win the 1 and 1/16th mile maiden by more than six lengths, despite racing greenly in an event that was scheduled for the turf, but switched back to dirt as the result of wet weather.

“We felt like she was a filly that wanted two turns, so that’s why we went to the grass first time out,” explained winning trainer Todd Pletcher.

“A lot of the Scat Daddys are taking to the grass. We figured she’d been training well so we’d go ahead and give it a try off the turf and she handled almost everything well. She got a little green down the lane, which made me nervous for a moment there and sure made Johnny a lot nervous. She said, ‘I thought we were supposed to be on the grass.’”

A homebred for Red Oak Stable, Daring Bride is a half-sister to stakes-placed Debonair Darling from good producer Darling Bride.
