Rip Van Winkle had another impressive debut winner on Saturday night when Sleepy Dust (2f Rip Van Winkle-Knockatotaun, by Spectrum) took a competitive Newbury maiden in eye-catching fashion.
Despite showing signs of inexperience, the winner quickened well in the final furlong to score by two and a quarter lengths and trainer Sylvester Kirk feels there could be better to come.
“That was a bit of a surprise as my two-year-olds usually need their first run,” Kirk told the Racing Post. “But Richard Hughes rode her in a piece of work the other day and he liked her.”
Sleepy Dust, who is owned by Malih Al Basti, was bred by the Holborn Trust Company and was bought for what looks a bargain 19,000gns as a yearling by Peter and Ross Doyle.
