Having his first start for astute Albury trainer Brett Cavanough, talented gelding Niblick (6g Encosta de Lago x Leica Vista, by Sir Tristram) recaptured his best form to win the Listed National Sprint in Canberra on Sunday.
A former classy stakes performer in Melbourne for the Lloyd Williams team, Niblick raced well fresh to win the 1400 metre contest by a nose for James McDonald, taking his overall record to seven wins and four placings from 20 starts with prizemoney of $332,125.
Niblick was sold last year as part of the Inglis conducted Hudson Conway Dispersal in Melbourne for $200,000 and obviously has plenty of good racing left in him.
Bred and sold as a yearling by Swettenham Stud, Niblick fetched $220,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and is a half-brother to Group II winner Moon Dragon and is one of six winners from stakes-placed Sir Tristram (IRE) mare Leica Vista, a half-sister to Group I winner Leica Smile.
Niblick is one of 93 stakes-winners by champion sire Encosta de Lago, who is fast closing in on 100 winners for the season and has 18 entries for the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
