New Grade Three Winner for Giant’s Causeway

Destin (Giant's Causeway) winning the Sam F Davis Stakes (Gr.3) at Tampa

A full brother to Grade I winner Creative Cause, promising colt Destin (3c Giant’s Causeway x Dream of Summer, by Siberian Summer) broke through for his first Black Type victory in the $200,000 Grade III Sam F Davis Stakes at Tampa.

A debut winner at Belmont in October, Destin was second and then fourth in two subsequent runs, but put it all together to win this 1 and 1/16th mile contest by more than two lengths in a dominant display.

Destin’s winning time of 1:43.67 is the second-fastest Sam F. Davis S. time ever, behind General Quarters’ stakes-record clocking of 1:43.54 in 2009.

A $400,000 Keeneland September purchase, Destin is prepared by Todd Pletcher for Twin Creeks Racing stables and has already won over $180,000 with two wins and a second from just four starts.

“We are just tickled pink,” said winning owner Randy Gullatt of Twin Creeks Racing Stables.

“John [Velazquez, winning rider] said he was still extremely green in this race, but if we can get him to learn something and keep his mind on running the whole time, I think he will take another step forward. I think he definitely wants to go longer.

“He is bred to run all day long. He just has to keep his mind on running. Obviously, he has taken a liking to this track, so the Tampa Bay Derby makes a lot of sense, but we’ll see.

“I really loved his pedigree [at the Keeneland 2014 Yearling Sale]; we have had a lot of luck with Giant’s Causeway horses, and he was a very athletic and well-put together colt.”

Destin is one of four winners from Group I winner and million earner Dream of Summer, who has a two year-old filly by Giant’s Causeway and was bred back to him last year.

Destin is the 160th stakes-winner for champion sire Giant’s Causeway.
