Munnings head shot

New Grade Three Winner for Munnings

She might have been a bargain $25,000 claimer just a few short months ago, but Munny Spunt (3f Munnings x Spin the Blues, by Hard Spun) became the latest stakes-winner for Munnings when awarded victory in the Grade III Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mar on the weekend following a successful protest.

The Doug O’Neil trained filly settled back in the field but charged home late to finish second beaten a neck to Zapperkat, who bumped her repeatedly in the run to the line.

The stewards took little time to reverse the placings putting Munny Spunt on top with an overall record that now reads five wins and three seconds from 13 starts with prizemoney topping $140,000.

“She has got such a big heart,” said Doug O’Neill said Munny Spunt, who was supplemented to the race for $1,000.

“We knew that Paradise Woods (beaten favourite) was a super good filly, but it was in our own backyard, we knew our filly loved the track and we thought we’d take the chance. I hate to win on a DQ like that, but our filly never got to run the last sixteenth of a mile. We hate to win like that, but we'll take it.”

The 23rd stakes-winner for Munnings, Munny Spunt is the first winner for Spin the Blues, a half-sister by Hard Spun to Grade II winner Blues Street.
