Top class sire Choisir posted his third Group I winner on Saturday when Choice Bro (2c Choisir x Ladidi, by Palace Music) charged home to win the Group I Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes at Awapuni in New Zealand.
The John Sargent trained colt settled midfield and powered home over the last two furlongs to score a short neck win over Magic Shaft in a driving finish to the 1400 metre contest.
Choice Bro has now won three of six starts earning $225,900, the Group I victory coming on top of his earlier win in the Group III Platinum Homes 2YO Classic at Pukekura.
Choice Bro was a $50,000 purchase for his trainer from the draft of Ainsley Downs at the 2011 NZB Select Yearling Sale, having previously fetched $40,000 when offered by Fairhill Farm at the Inglis Australian Select Weanling Sale where he was snapped up by bloodstock agent Paul Willetts.
Choice Bro was foaled and raised at Fairhill Farm in Australia and studmaster Mike O’Donnell remembers the youngster well.
“He was bred by a long time very good client of ours in Richard Pietrykowski,” said O’Donnell.
“As a weanling he was a well built strong individual and we were surprised that he didn’t reach his reserve of $50,000 at the Inglis Weanling Sales, but he was sold shortly after passing through the ring to Paul Willetts.”
Choice Bro is one of four winners, but the first stakes-winner for Palace Music mare Ladidi, a half-sister to stakes-winner Cult Figure, the dam of stakes-winner Cargo Cult.
Choice Bro is one of 35 stakes-winners for Choisir, who has 12 youngsters for the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
