New Group One Winner for Rock of Gibraltar

Versatile shuttle sire Rock of Gibraltar posted a new Group I winner in South Africa on Tuesday when his Irish bred daughter Europa Point (5m Rock of Gibraltar x Gorband, by Woodman) captured the Group I L Jaffee Empress Club Stakes over 1600 metres at Turffontein. The Mike de Kock trained mare bolted away to win by three and a half lengths in a thoroughly dominant performance, her overall record now eight wins from 12 starts with her previous best win the Group III Acacia Handicap. Europa Point has a big pedigree being a half-sister to last year’s high class European juvenile Harbour Watch from the blue-blooded matron Gorband, who is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to multiple Group I winner Timber Country, her grand-dam the legendary broodmare Fall Aspen. Europa Point is the eighth Group I winner for Rock of Gibraltar, who is the sire of 72 stakes-winners worldwide, his progeny excelling in both hemispheres.
