High Chaparral featured at Rosehill on Saturday as the sire of promising stayer Western Symbol (5g High Chaparral x Blue Symbol, by Bluebird), who tasted his first Black Type success when taking out the Group III ATC Cellabrations HKJC Stakes over 2000 metres.
A five year-old gelding prepared by Gai Waterhouse, Western Symbol has been quietly working through the grades and was stakes-placed in the Bendigo Cup last spring.
Having his second run back from a spell, Western Symbol travelled just behind the leaders for Tommy Berry and ran to the line strongly to win by a long neck, his overall record now five wins and six placings from 13 starts with prizemoney of 177,940.
Bought privately, Western Symbol is the first stakes-winner for Bluebird mare Blue Symbol, whose dam is a half-sister to Group I WATC West Australian Derby winner Starjo.
Western Symbol is the 34th stakes-winner for English Derby winner High Chaparral, who has 19 entries for the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
