New Stakes-Winner for Scat Daddy

Lightly raced filly Allanah (3f Scat Daddy x Star in the Corner by Holy Bull) might not be the easiest horse to train, but she made it all worthwhile when powering clear for a dominant win in the $50,000 Cincinnatti Trophy at Turfway Park.

Allowed to settle into her stride by Norberto Arroyo Jr, Allanah surged into contention and cleared right away to win the six and a half furlong contest by five and a half lengths, taking her overall record to two wins from just three starts.

The filly was fitted with blinkers for this tougher assignment and they obviously worked for the best.

“In her last race, she blew the first turn–in her first race, too, on the turf at Churchill,” explained winning trainer Kellyn Gorder.

“So even though she won last time without blinkers, I thought it was good to add them. She’s been a little difficult to deal with and doesn’t always take care of herself. I had shipped her to Fair Grounds and was going to run her there, but she’d get herself in trouble during training, and it wasn’t safe for her or the riders.

“She was very immature mentally. So I brought her back up to Keeneland to train in a quieter environment. She’s a tall, rangy filly so I don’t think she’ll ever have a lot of early speed, but she broke better today and even though she was wide, she was wide because that’s where Norberto put her, not because she was getting out. It seemed like the light bulb went on today.”

A $185,000 purchase from the Keeneland April 2YO Sale, Allanah is raced by TK Stables and is the best of two winners from Star in a Corner, a half-sister by Holy Bull to stakes-winners Winning Agenda and Dixie Two Star.

She becomes the ninth stakes-winner for Scat Daddy, whose oldest progeny are now four year-olds.
