New Stakes-Winner for Munnings

Fast finishing Phat Man (3g Munnings x Nicole’s Dream, by Northern Trend) charged home late to snatch a last stride win in the $99,000 Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth on the weekend.

Trained by Joe Sharp, Phat Man took his overall record to three wins and three seconds from nine starts with a heart stopping victory in this 1 and 1/16th mile feature that is a prep race for the Grade I Haskell Invitational at the end of the month.

“I was tracking the five horse [Talk Logistics] early on,” said winning jockey Wilmer Garcia.

“They got away from me a little bit, but my horse has a nice big long stride. I asked him at the 3/8ths pole and he started to pick it up for me then. When we got in the clear in the lane, he really started to move.”

A half-brother to stakes-winner Estellara, Phat Man is one of four winners from stakes-winner Nicole’s Dream.

He is the 22nd stakes-winner for terrific young sire Munnings, who goes from strength to strength.
