In his Racing Post column on Saturday, jockey Richard Hughes made no secret of the regard in which he holds King Torus (3c Oratorio-Dipterous, by Mujadil) and the Oratorio colt justified that confidence with a facile victory in Haydock’s Listed Superior Mile.
Last season’s G2 Superlative Stakes and G2 July Stakes hero had come on from his seasonal comeback at York last month and looks set for a productive rest of 2011 after this latest win.
“I did fancy him. He’d come on a lot for York and had been off a long time before then,” said Hughes. “We went slowish and then were always quickening up the straight. He got a bit lonely in front on his own. I’d love to ride him over a mile and a quarter.”
The Richard Hannon-trained colt continued a good week for Oratorio, whose yearlings were in demand at Doncaster’s Premier Yearling Sale including a filly who will join trainer Jim Gorman after making £80,000.
