Outstanding hurdler Oscar Whisky (9g Oscar-Ash Baloo, by Phardante) continued an auspicious start to his chasing career when running out an easy G2 winner at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day.
Nicky Henderson’s charge, who boasts five graded successes over hurdles, was produced late by jockey Barry Geraghty to beat the classy Taquin De Seuil in the G2 Cheltenham Pony Club Raceday Novices’ Chase.
“His jumping was good,” said Henderson. “The last couple of times he’s had do it all on his own so it was nice to get a bit of company today.
“He was a Cheltenham specialist over hurdles and he looks like he’s enjoying it over fences. He’s just turned nine so is on the older side to be starting over fences but he’s taken to it really well. I think we’ve got a lot to look forward to.”
Oscar Whisky, an €80,000 store bred by Stephanie Hanly, has now accrued over £450,000 in prize money. He is rated a 6/1 chance with bookmakers for the Jewson Novices’ Chase at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival.
