Fastnet Rock head shot

Promising Debut Winner for Fastnet

Two blue-blooded fillies fought out the finish of the 1300 metre maiden at Hawkesbury on Thursday with victory going to the well-bred Cana (3f Fastnet Rock x Scattered, by Tale of the Cat) carrying the colours of US based Spendthrift Farm. Cana looked good in her only previous outing when winning at the Rosehill barrier trials on September 15 and the Hawkes Racing trained filly was able to produce the goods on raceday. She was sent out favourite and did best in a tight finish for Tommy Berry to win by a short half head over Aaralyn (3f Choisir  x Gold Chant, by El Moxie), a half-sister to Group I winner Amicus and three-quarter sister-in-blood to champion sprinter and successful sire Starspangledbanner. A $650,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Spendthrift from the Highgrove Stud draft, Cana is bred to go quick as a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group I VRC Newmarket Handicap winner Wanted. She is also a half-sister to stakes-winner Interspersed from the good producer Scattered, who has a yearling colt by Pierro, but unfortunately missed to Fastnet Rock last spring. Spendthrift Farm recently paid $US1million for a superbly bred Fastnet Rock filly from Maryinsky at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale and are great admirers of the champion Australian sire.
