Improving young stayer Hippopus (3c High Chaparral x Straight Eight, by Danske) took another step in the right direction when scoring a commanding win at Canterbury on Wednesday.
A three year-old colt by High Chaparral, Hippopus was rated perfectly in front by Jim Cassidy and had little trouble lugging 59.5 kg to a runaway win in the 1900 metre restricted event.
A $350,000 NZB Premier Yearling Sale purchase from the draft of Windsor Park Stud, Hippopus is making good progress in his first campaign and has won two races and placed twice from six starts to date.
Hippopus is one of three winners from stakes-placed Straight Eight, a half-sister to Group III winner The Big Bopper.
High Chaparral has a string of promising three year-olds starting to emerge in Australia including Kingdoms, High Shot and Photon Willie.
The English Derby winner has a sizable draft of 28 youngsters for the 2013 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale next month.
