Breaking her maiden at Kembla on Saturday in good style was royally bred Taste of Heaven (3f Encosta de Lago x Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad), a filly considered by many to be the best bred filly in Australia.
By champion sire Encosta de Lago, Taste of Heaven is a half-sister to Group I winners Redoute’s Choice and Platinum Scissors and full sister to Group I winner Manhattan Rain being the very last foal of celebrated producer Shantha’s Choice, who died in 2012.
Prepared by Gai Waterhouse for her breeder Muzaffar Yaseen’s Teeley Assets, Taste of Heaven was having her second start and improved on her debut fifth at Canterbury last month to win the 1300 metre maiden by more than two lengths.
A remarkable mare that has left a lasting legacy, Shantha’s Choice has had 10 foals to race for nine winners with stakes-winners Sliding Cube and Echoes of Heaven (also by Encosta de Lago) adding to the previously mentioned Group I winners.
Whatever the future holds for Taste of Heaven, she marks the end of an era and will be another valuable addition to the star studded Teeley Assets broodmare band when her racing days are done.
Teeley Assets are currently breeding with four daughters of Shantha’s Choice in Monsoon Wedding, Unspoken Choice, Ten Carat Rock and The Broken Shore, so it’s a family still very much on the move.
They will offer a yearling filly by Encosta de Lago from Monsoon Wedding at Magic Millions next week, the blue-blooded youngster to be consigned by Coolmore as agent and offered as Lot 587.
She is a full sister to Group III winner Precious Lorraine and this season’s promising stakes-placed two year-old Lucky Raquie.
For those breeders looking to secure a piece of this magnificent family, this filly represents a rare opportunity.
